November 27, 2019: Hello Winter, Snow School, Colorado Gives Day
Greetings from Silverton,
It is wonderful to see November break open a bit with substantial snowfall. So far this water year....the first half of October was pretty boring as far as precipitation goes but it was also a bit cooler which in itself was a nice change of pace from September which was the warmest on record or close to it in many areas. Our precipitation gauge started seeing action October 18 with 1.6" water in the form of snow deposited October 18-31. The first half of November was mostly warmer than average with no precipitation recorded at Swamp Angel until November 20. Since November 20 we have received 2.3" of precipitation which has started building the snowpack with 22" of snow accumulation. And to go along with it the forecast is showing snowflakes through Saturday. The Thanksgiving storm is supposed to deliver another 18"-24" of snow over the San Juan Mountains with some areas seeing up to 40", other ranges will receive in the neighborhood of 12"-18".
Snow School: If you are interested in attending or learning more about "Snow School for Water Managers" please contact me via email or cell phone (see below). The class will be held at our office in Silverton, CO from February 19-21. This year we plan to have a guest NRCS hydrologist give a talk about new products and tools on their website, and even how they put a forecast together. The workshop is a mixture classroom discussion and hands-on field sessions, designed to enhance understanding of snowpack processes, snow monitoring and data. Attached is a flyer containing more details.
Colorado Gives Day: Unlike most non-profit organizations we only solicit donations once a year, not because we don't need the support, far from it, but because many readers work for organizations that contribute to CSAS and ideally we want to keep our readers updated on current snowpack, dust-on-snow, and streamflow conditions instead of continually bombarding them with donation requests. But now it is that time of year when we ask you to support our small non-profit either through donating online, through the mail, or preferably we invite you to join us for Colorado Gives Day. December 10, 2019 is Colorado Gives Day and is your opportunity to make your gifts go farther. The Community First Foundation offers incentive funds and bonus drawings for non-profits that receive donations through Colorado Gives Day website on December 10. Every gift qualifies CSAS for a higher percentage of the incentive funds. You can schedule a donation now at www.coloradogives.org.
Enjoy Thanksgiving and the Snow!
